Wellness Wednesdays: Mental Health and Well-being Tips for All

Let Go of Worry

Worry is an overwhelming feeling that can creep into our bodies. It is a sneaky feeling and it is hard to identify all the parts that go into it. Worry usually begins with one or more thoughts that build over time and begin to take over our bodies in ways that surprise us. A racing heart, an aching body, a bogged down mind that becomes distracted easily are all signs of WORRY.

Today’s Wellness Wednesday post introduces one strategy to help you let go of a worry and be more free and calm in the moment.

Try this:

Use a piece of paper and a writing utensil:
  1. Sit quietly for as long as it takes to identify one worry that you currently have.
    • If you are having a hard time identifying a worry but you know you have worried recently: Do a body scan, ask yourself, ‘do I feel out of sorts anywhere?’. Then, ask yourself, ‘when did this feeling start?’ This will help you identify a current worry for you.
  2. Write your worry down or draw it on a piece of paper.
  3. Fold it up and put it in a safe place where you can find it again, such as a small pocket in your backpack, desk, between your mattresses, in a small box, or drawer.
  4. Enjoy your life – knowing that your worry is safe, you are safe and having worry sit in your body is bad for you. You don’t need your worry when you play, eat or sleep.
  5. you will bring out your worry again when you feel calm to think about it and/or talk to someone about it, ask God for help and sort it out.
  6. You can throw your worry away if you don’t need it anymore.

Ask yourself, there is no wrong answer:

We all have ‘worries’ sometimes. Since completing this activity, how would you scale your level of calm and control over the worry:

10 – it’s still taking over my whole brain and body
0 – the worry is away where it belongs, and it is not controlling me?

What is one thing you are going to do to assist you in bringing the number down even one notch?
